Do you journal?
Do you have a favorite spot you like to journal?
I started journaling almost three years ago when I was training to be a coach. It’s really helped me gain clarity and grow personally.
There are many ways to journal, but I like to start with a journaling prompt. It kind of grounds me in the writing, and then I get more in-depth or creative once I have a good start. Some days, I just work on the prompt for a few minutes, and that’s it.
All you need is a pen and paper. A pretty journal is always a beautiful thing to have, but not required! You can even journal on a phone or device, but I find that pen and paper work best for me.
It’s important to find a quiet time and place to journal. It’s not easy to connect with your thoughts when your dogs are barking and you are trying to get ready to get out the door!
Some people like to journal at the same time every day, so it becomes a habit. You can also work it into your self-care routine by lighting a candle, listening to soft music, or dimming the lights. I like to journal outside (when it’s not freezing cold), where I am connected to nature.
Journaling has a lot of benefits. Putting pen to paper has a positive impact on our personal growth, creativity, and overall well-being. How?
– The act of journaling is a way to slow down, sit down, get quiet, and get comfortable with yourself. This helps cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and mindfulness.
– Journaling helps us get clarity. When we put our thoughts and feelings into words and onto paper, we’re able to see them more objectively, untangling our feelings and gaining a fresh perspective and a new direction.
– Research has shown that journaling is a powerful tool for cultivating emotional intelligence and a more resilient mindset. So, journaling is helpful when dealing with stress or difficult situations. And it can be a form of emotional catharsis, allowing us to release pent-up feelings so we can find a path forward.
– Writing is also a catalyst for personal growth and creativity. When we journal, we record our thoughts, ideas, dreams, and aspirations, helping us visualize them and bring them into reality as well as see our obstacles and work on overcoming them.
– We can also use our journals to outline our intentions, priorities, and action steps. Writing down our goals and plans can increase our commitment and accountability, making it more likely that we’ll follow through. It’s also a great place to celebrate our accomplishments.
One of the great things about journaling is that it’s a very private and personal practice. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, and its good to experiment and find what works best for you.
Whether you prefer to write stream-of-consciousness style, create visual art in your journal, or use prompts to guide your reflections, the key is to find a method that resonates with you. And don’t be afraid to mix it up – your journaling practice can evolve and change over time.
